East Africa Itinerary
Kenya Wildlife Classic
About This Journey
Ten days that take in the four landscapes Kenya is known for, and gets the order right. Elephants beneath Kilimanjaro at Amboseli. The dust-red herds of Tsavo. Flamingos and rhino in the Rift Valley at Nakuru. And finally the Mara, where the big cats live at a density found almost nowhere else on the continent. A classic route, run properly, with the drives timed for light rather than for the itinerary.
What This Journey Holds
- Amboseli elephants against Kilimanjaro
- Tsavo's red elephant herds
- Big Five in the Mara
- Lake Nakuru flamingos
Day by Day
Day 1:Arrival — Nairobi
Arrive in Nairobi and, if the timing allows, spend the afternoon at the Sheldrick elephant orphanage and the Giraffe Centre in Karen — two institutions that explain, better than any briefing could, what conservation actually costs and who does the work. Dinner with your guide, and an early start tomorrow.
Day 2:Nairobi to Amboseli
Drive southeast across the Athi plains to Amboseli, at the foot of Kilimanjaro. The park is small and mostly flat, built around swamps fed by snowmelt filtering underground from the mountain — which is why elephants gather here in numbers, and why the ground stays green when everything around it is dust.
Day 3:Amboseli — Kilimanjaro & the Elephants
The mountain is usually clear at dawn and again just before dusk, and only then. You go out early for the shot everyone comes for: a herd crossing the pan with 5,895 metres of Kilimanjaro standing behind them. In between, Observation Hill for the long view, and time with elephant families that have been studied continuously since 1972 and are known individually by name.
Day 4:Amboseli to Tsavo West — Mzima Springs
East into Tsavo West, a wilder and more broken landscape of lava flows and volcanic hills. Mzima Springs delivers 250 million litres a day of water filtered through porous rock from the Chyulu Hills, gin-clear, with an underwater viewing chamber where hippo and barbel pass by at eye level. Afternoon game drive across the Chaimu lava terrain.
Day 5:Tsavo East — The Red Elephants
Cross into Tsavo East, all open horizon and red laterite dust that the elephants roll in until they turn the colour of the ground itself. The Galana River holds crocodile and waterbuck, and the Yatta Plateau — the world's longest lava flow — runs along the western edge for 290 kilometres. Vast, hot, and largely empty of vehicles.
Day 6:North to the Rift Valley — Lake Naivasha
A long travelling day back through Nairobi and up onto the Rift Valley escarpment, where the road tips over the edge and the floor of the valley opens out two thousand feet below. Arrive at Lake Naivasha for a late afternoon boat among the hippo pods and fish eagles, or a walk on Crescent Island where the game is unfenced and there are no predators to worry about.
Day 7:Lake Nakuru — Flamingos & Rhino
A short drive north to Lake Nakuru, a soda lake fringed with flamingo and pelican and surrounded by yellow-barked fever tree forest. This is also Kenya's most reliable rhino sanctuary — both black and white — and the place to look for the Rothschild's giraffe and the tree-resting leopard the park is quietly known for.
Day 8:Across the Rift — Into the Maasai Mara
West across the valley floor and up into the Mara ecosystem, arriving in the early afternoon. The transition is abrupt and complete: from soda flats to rolling grassland stretching further than you can resolve. An afternoon game drive to get your eye in before the light goes.
Day 9:Maasai Mara — Full Day
A full day with a packed breakfast so you never have to come back for anything. The Mara holds one of the densest lion populations on earth, and your guide knows the prides by territory. Cheetah on the termite mounds, elephant in the riverine bush, and — between July and October — the migration herds pressing against the river.
Day 10:Final Drive & Departure
One last dawn drive, when the light is low and gold and the predators are still moving from the night. Breakfast in the bush, then the airstrip and a light aircraft back to Nairobi for your onward flight — normally with a window seat over the escarpment, which is the right way to leave.
