Mountain Gorilla Trekking

Uganda & Rwanda
8 – 10 days

About This Journey

There are fewer than 1,100 mountain gorillas left in the world. All of them live within a single range: the forests of the Albertine Rift, straddling Uganda and Rwanda. This journey takes you to both — an opportunity to sit with two different habituated families, in two different forest systems, and return home carrying something that does not quite have a name.

What This Journey Holds

  • Trek to habituated gorilla families in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
  • Golden monkey tracking in the Virunga volcanic highlands of Rwanda
  • Luxury lodge stays at the forest edge with views across the Albertine Rift
  • Cultural visits to communities that coexist alongside the gorilla habitat
  • Optional second gorilla permit — Bwindi in Uganda, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda

Day by Day

Day 1:Arrival — Kigali, Rwanda

Arrive in Kigali, one of Africa's most ordered and quietly beautiful capitals. A short city tour before transferring to your lodge north of the city, where the Virunga volcanoes begin to rise on the horizon.

Day 2:Volcanoes National Park

Drive through the highlands to the Volcanoes National Park, the Rwandan sector of the Virunga range. The air here is thin and cool. The volcanoes are largely covered in cloud. Your lodge sits at the forest edge, and from the terrace you watch the mist move through the trees.

Day 3:Gorilla Trekking — Rwanda

An early briefing at the park headquarters, then you begin. The trek can take anywhere from one hour to five, depending on where the family has moved overnight. Your trackers have been following them since before you woke. When you arrive, there is a moment of stillness before the family acknowledges you and continues about their morning. You have one hour. It passes slowly and instantly.

Day 4:Golden Monkey Tracking

A lighter day after the intensity of gorilla trekking. Golden monkeys — vivid, fast, impossibly colourful — live in the bamboo forest on the lower slopes of the Virungas. Tracking them requires different skills and a willingness to move quickly. A joyful contrast to yesterday.

Day 5:Cross to Uganda — Bwindi

Travel overland from Rwanda into Uganda, crossing the border at Cyanika and driving south through the tea estates and crater lakes of Kigezi — the Switzerland of Africa, as it is sometimes called. Arrive at Bwindi Impenetrable Forest before dark.

Day 6:Bwindi — Rest & Forest Walks

A rest day in the forest. Guided walks along the forest perimeter introduce the extraordinary birdlife of Bwindi — including several Albertine Rift endemics found nowhere else on earth. An afternoon briefing from your gorilla guide about the family you will visit tomorrow.

Day 7:Gorilla Trekking — Bwindi

A second gorilla experience — and in a different forest, with a different family, the encounter is entirely new. Bwindi's gorillas tend to range higher and in denser vegetation. The trek is more challenging. The reward, when you find them, is proportionate.

Day 8:Return & Departure

Transfer back to Kigali or Entebbe for your international flight. The drive takes you through some of the most beautiful highland scenery in East Africa. A final lunch, and then the long journey home — carrying images and feelings that will settle and grow over time.
