East Africa Itinerary
Pearl of Africa Circuit
About This Journey
Uganda is unlike anywhere else in Africa. It is a country that holds everything — rainforest and savanna, crater lakes and volcanic peaks, gorillas and lions within the same border. This circuit moves through its greatest landscapes at an unhurried pace: north through Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to the thunder of Murchison Falls, then south through Kibale and Queen Elizabeth National Park before ending in the mist of Bwindi.
What This Journey Holds
- Track southern white rhino on foot with expert rangers at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
- Boat to the base of Murchison Falls — the most powerful waterfall on the Nile
- Track chimpanzees on foot through the canopy trails of Kibale Forest
- Cruise the Kazinga Channel at dusk as hippos emerge and elephants come to drink
- Watch the sun set behind the Rwenzori Mountains from Queen Elizabeth National Park
- Trek through the ancient forests of Bwindi to sit with a habituated gorilla family
Day by Day
Day 1:Arrival in Kampala
Your journey begins in Kampala, Uganda's vivid, layered capital. After settling into your lodge, the evening is yours — perhaps a sundowner on the Nile or a quiet dinner as the city falls into its warm, equatorial night.
Day 2:Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to Murchison Falls
Head northwest to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, where expert rangers lead you on foot through the bush to find southern white rhino — Uganda's only wild rhino population. Continue to Murchison Falls National Park and arrive as the late light settles across the Nile.
Day 3:Murchison Falls — Nile Cruise & Game Drive
A boat takes you upstream to the base of Murchison Falls, where the entire Nile is forced through a seven-metre gap in the rocks and drops in a roar of white water. Continue with a game drive across the northern savanna among elephant, giraffe, buffalo, and lion, then watch the evening settle over the river.
Day 4:Murchison Falls to Kibale Forest
Fly or drive south along the Albertine Rift toward Kibale. The open savanna gives way to crater lakes, tea estates, and dense equatorial forest, with the Rwenzori range rising in the distance. Arrive at your forest lodge in time to hear the canopy come alive at dusk.
Day 5:Chimpanzee Tracking, Kibale
With your tracker, you enter Kibale Forest — home to one of the highest densities of primates on earth. Chimpanzees move through the canopy above, and as you follow their calls deeper into the forest, you begin to understand why this place feels so primordially alive. The encounter, when it comes, is unhurried and extraordinary.
Day 6:Kibale to Queen Elizabeth National Park
Drive south past crater lakes and the foothills of the Rwenzoris to Queen Elizabeth National Park. The forest opens into Rift Valley savanna as you approach the Kazinga Channel, with an afternoon game drive introducing elephant, buffalo, antelope, and the park's prolific birdlife.
Day 7:Kazinga Channel & Ishasha
Board a private boat as the light falls across the Kazinga Channel. Hippos surface around you, cape buffalo wade at the banks, and elephants move toward the water. Later, continue into the Ishasha sector, where lions are known to rest in the branches of ancient fig trees.
Day 8:Queen Elizabeth to Bwindi
Drive south through Ishasha and into the rolling highlands to Bwindi — the ancient rainforest that clings to the slopes of the Albertine Rift. It is one of the oldest forests in Africa and home to nearly half the world's remaining mountain gorillas. Arrive, settle in, and prepare quietly for tomorrow.
Day 9:Gorilla Trekking, Bwindi
This is the day. You walk into the forest with a small group and your expert tracker, following signs through the undergrowth — bent branches, knuckle prints, the faint smell of gorilla — until you find them. A silverback rests in a shaft of light. Juveniles play in the branches. You sit with them for one hour. It is not easy to describe afterwards.
Day 10:Bwindi to Entebbe & Departure
A final morning in the highlands before flying or driving back to Entebbe for your onward journey. The circuit closes with Uganda's full range behind you — rhino country, the Nile, primate forest, open savanna, and the deep green of Bwindi.
