Primate Paradise

Uganda
7 – 9 days

About This Journey

Uganda holds more primate species than any other safari country on earth, and this journey is built to reach the greatest of them. Mountain gorillas in the ancient understorey of Bwindi. Chimpanzees in Kibale, where you spend a full day with a habituating group rather than the usual hour. Golden monkeys pouring through the bamboo of Mgahinga. Seven days, three forests, and a sequence of encounters that reorder how you think about the distance between us and them.

What This Journey Holds

  • Mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi
  • Chimp habituation in Kibale
  • Golden monkey trek in Mgahinga
  • Entebbe botanical garden walks

Day by Day

Day 1:Arrival — Entebbe & the Botanical Gardens

Land at Entebbe and settle in on the shore of Lake Victoria. If your arrival allows it, spend the late afternoon in the Botanical Gardens next door — planted in 1898 and now grown wild at the edges, where black-and-white colobus swing through the fig trees and hornbills call across the lawns. A gentle first meeting with the country's primates before the forests begin.

Day 2:Entebbe to Kibale Forest

Drive west through the crater-lake country of Fort Portal, past tea estates laid out in geometric green across the hills, with the Rwenzori range holding cloud on the horizon. You arrive at Kibale in the afternoon — 795 square kilometres of moist tropical forest holding thirteen primate species. Your briefing happens over dinner, and the forest talks all night.

Day 3:Chimpanzee Habituation Experience, Kibale

This is not the standard one-hour visit. You join the researchers at dawn as they locate a group still being habituated, and you stay with them — through the morning feeding, the midday rest, the afternoon patrol — for as long as you can keep up. It is muddy, unpredictable, and utterly absorbing. You watch politics, grooming, and grudges play out in a society that is almost, but not quite, familiar.

Day 4:Bigodi Wetland & South to Bwindi

A morning walk through the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, run entirely by the community that surrounds it — grey-cheeked mangabeys, red colobus, and some of the best birding in western Uganda. Then the long, beautiful drive south along the flank of the Rift, skirting Queen Elizabeth National Park and climbing into the highlands until the forest closes over the road at Bwindi.

Day 5:Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

You gather at dawn for the briefing, then walk into a forest that has stood, unbroken, for 25,000 years. The trackers went ahead before first light. You follow them through nettles and vine and steep, root-tangled ground until word comes back on the radio. Then you stop, put down your bag, and spend one hour a few metres from a mountain gorilla family. Nobody talks much on the walk out.

Day 6:Mgahinga — Golden Monkey Trek

Transfer to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in the far southwest, where three Virunga volcanoes stand shoulder to shoulder on the Uganda-Rwanda-DRC border. The golden monkey trek takes you into a bamboo zone at around 2,500 metres, where a troop several hundred strong moves through the stems in bursts of orange and gold — fast, loud, and impossible to photograph well. Everyone tries anyway.

Day 7:The Batwa Trail & Departure

A final morning on the Batwa Trail, walking the forest with guides whose families lived inside it for millennia before it became a national park — a first-hand account of medicine, hunting, honey, and displacement, told without varnish. Then the transfer back to Entebbe, or a light aircraft north if your onward journey continues.
