Rwanda Wildlife Circuit

Rwanda
9 – 12 days

About This Journey

Most visitors come to Rwanda for the gorillas and leave three days later. This circuit uses nine days to show that the country also holds a fully restored Big Five savanna park in the east, a chain of volcanoes in the north, and one of Africa's Great Lakes down its western edge. Akagera's recovery — from a poached-out remnant to lion and rhino country in under a decade — is one of the best conservation stories on the continent, and you see it first-hand.

What This Journey Holds

  • Mountain gorilla trekking
  • Golden monkey tracking
  • Akagera NP Big Five
  • Lake Kivu kayaking

Day by Day

Day 1:Arrival — Kigali

Arrive in Kigali and settle in. Depending on your landing time, the Genocide Memorial or the Kimironko market — the first for context, the second for the ordinary, noisy present. Dinner with your guide to lay out the circuit ahead.

Day 2:East to Akagera National Park

Drive two and a half hours east to Akagera, on the Tanzanian border — a landscape of rolling acacia savanna, papyrus swamp, and a chain of lakes fed by the Akagera River. In 2010 this park had no lion and no rhino. An afternoon game drive shows you what fifteen years of concerted work has put back.

Day 3:Akagera — Big Five Game Drives

A full day in the park. Lion were reintroduced in 2015 and have bred well; eastern black rhino returned in 2017 and white rhino in 2021, making this the only Big Five destination in Rwanda. Elephant and buffalo work the northern plains, and the roan and eland here are among the best-seen anywhere in East Africa.

Day 4:Akagera — Lake Ihema by Boat

A morning boat safari on Lake Ihema, where hippo pods run into the hundreds and the papyrus fringe holds shoebill, African darter, and enormous crocodile hauled out along the banks. In the afternoon, a behind-the-scenes visit with the park's rangers or the canine anti-poaching unit — the machinery that makes the recovery hold.

Day 5:Across the Country to Volcanoes National Park

A long, spectacular drive northwest across the whole width of the country, from savanna into the terraced highlands and up to Musanze beneath the Virunga chain. Arrive in the afternoon, settle in at the forest edge, and prepare — kit, boots, an early night.

Day 6:Gorilla Trekking

Dawn briefing at Kinigi, then into the bamboo and hagenia on the volcano's slopes. The trackers have been out since first light, and when the radio comes through you leave your bag and walk the last hundred metres slowly. An hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family. There is no adequate way to prepare for it and no adequate way to describe it afterwards.

Day 7:Golden Monkeys & Musanze Caves

A second trek in the morning to find the golden monkeys in the bamboo zone — an endangered Albertine Rift endemic, and far more energetic company than the gorillas. In the afternoon, the Musanze lava-tube caves, or the Dian Fossey Fund campus, or the Gorilla Guardians village where former poachers now run the cultural programme.

Day 8:Lake Kivu — Kayaking the Congo Nile Trail

Descend west to Lake Kivu at Gisenyi. The afternoon is on the water: kayaking along the shoreline of the Congo Nile Trail, past fishing villages and eucalyptus coves, with the singing of the fishermen's boats carrying across the lake at dusk. There are no crocodiles or hippo in Kivu, so you can also simply swim.

Day 9:Kivu Morning & Departure

A last morning on the lake — a boat to one of the islands, or coffee on a terrace watching the volcanoes emerge from cloud across the water. Then the drive back to Kigali through the hills for your evening flight.
