East Africa Itinerary
Serengeti Migration Safari
About This Journey
The Serengeti is not a place that benefits from rushing. Its drama unfolds slowly — a lion pride moving at dusk, a cheetah picking up a scent and beginning to run, the first wildebeest appearing on the horizon at dawn and then, suddenly, a million of them. This is a journey that asks you to slow down, look longer, and let the scale of it find you.
What This Journey Holds
- Follow the migration across the central and northern Serengeti at the peak of the river crossings
- Dawn game drives in silence before the other vehicles arrive
- Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater — 25,000 animals in a 20km caldera
- Optional hot air balloon flight at sunrise over the plains
- Stay in a mobile camp positioned to follow the herd — moved seasonally for proximity
Day by Day
Day 1:Fly into the Serengeti
Fly from Arusha or Kilimanjaro directly into the Serengeti — the light aircraft descends over plains that seem to extend without boundary. Your mobile camp is positioned exactly where the migration is thickest. By late afternoon you are already on your first game drive.
Day 2:Dawn Drive — Central Plains
The alarm sounds at 5:30. The coffee is already made. You leave before first light and watch the Serengeti wake up — lions returning from a night hunt, hyenas circling a kill at the road edge, the air still cool and sharp. This is the hour the Serengeti reveals itself most honestly.
Day 3:Following the Migration
Your guide has been in contact with the tracker teams since before dawn. The main herd has moved north overnight and you follow, driving through columns of wildebeest and zebra that part around your vehicle like a slow river. The sound of thousands of animals moving across the grass is something you carry afterwards.
Day 4:River Crossings (Seasonal)
Between July and October, the crossings at the Mara River are among the most dramatic events in the natural world. You wait at the bank with your guide, sometimes for hours, until the pressure builds and the first animal steps into the current. What follows is unpredictable, ancient, and entirely extraordinary.
Day 5:Ngorongoro Crater
Drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and descend into the crater. This 20-kilometre caldera holds one of the densest concentrations of wildlife in Africa — black rhino, lion, flamingo, leopard, hyena. The walls of the crater rise around you and you spend the day in a world that feels complete and enclosed.
Day 6:Final Morning & Departure
One last drive before the morning heat builds. A final cup of coffee on the kopje as the sun rises over the plains. Then the light aircraft back to Arusha, the plains dropping away beneath you, the memory of what you witnessed already settling into something permanent.
