Serengeti & Ngorongoro Classic

Tanzania
8 – 10 days

About This Journey

Two of the greatest wildlife landscapes on earth sit within a day's drive of one another in northern Tanzania — the Serengeti, which runs to the horizon in every direction, and Ngorongoro, a collapsed volcano holding a complete ecosystem inside its walls. This eight-day circuit builds toward them through Tarangire's baobabs and Manyara's escarpment, so that by the time you reach the crater rim you have earned the view.

What This Journey Holds

  • Serengeti plains game drives
  • Ngorongoro Crater floor
  • Tarangire elephant herds
  • Lake Manyara flamingos

Day by Day

Day 1:Arrival — Kilimanjaro & Arusha

Land at Kilimanjaro International and transfer to Arusha, the town at the foot of Mount Meru that serves as the gateway to the whole northern circuit. Settle in, meet your guide, and go through the route over dinner. If the cloud lifts in the evening, Meru shows itself above the coffee farms.

Day 2:Tarangire National Park

Drive southwest to Tarangire, a park defined by two things: baobabs, standing like water towers across the whole landscape, and elephants, which come to the Tarangire River in the dry season in herds of several hundred. It is also one of the best places in Tanzania for the less-seen antelope — fringe-eared oryx, gerenuk, and the long-necked lesser kudu in the thicket.

Day 3:Lake Manyara & the Escarpment

North to Lake Manyara, wedged between a soda lake and a 600-metre wall of the Rift Valley escarpment. Groundwater forest at the entrance gives way to open floodplain: baboon troops in the hundreds, flamingo drifting pink across the shallows, and the tree-climbing lions the park has been arguing about for decades. Climb to the Ngorongoro highlands in the late afternoon.

Day 4:Into the Serengeti

Cross the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and descend onto the short-grass plains, stopping at Olduvai Gorge where the Leakeys found the hominin remains that reset the story of human origins. Then the Serengeti opens — the word is Maasai for endless plain, and from the ground you stop treating that as a description and start treating it as a measurement.

Day 5:Central Serengeti — Seronera

A full day around the Seronera valley, where the river holds water year-round and the predator density is correspondingly extraordinary. Lion prides on the kopjes, cheetah on the open ground, and the leopards that drape themselves along the sausage-tree branches through the heat of the afternoon. Your guide works the drainage lines and the light rather than the map.

Day 6:Serengeti — Dawn Balloon & Deep Plains

For those who want it, a balloon lifts off before first light and drifts a few hundred feet above the plains in complete silence, landing to a champagne breakfast set up in the grass. Otherwise, the morning is a long drive out to whichever sector the herds are currently in — north to the Mara River or west along the Grumeti corridor, depending on the season.

Day 7:To Ngorongoro — The Crater Rim

Drive east out of the park and climb to the rim of Ngorongoro, 2,300 metres up, where the cloud sits in the afternoon and the caldera appears and disappears below you. Twenty kilometres across, six hundred metres deep, and holding around 25,000 large animals inside its walls. You look at it for a long time before dinner.

Day 8:The Crater Floor & Departure

Down the descent road at first light, onto a floor that functions as a closed world: black rhino on the Lerai plain, lion prides with no reason to move, flamingo on Lake Magadi, and elephant bulls carrying tusks of a size rarely seen elsewhere. Ascend by late morning and transfer to Arusha or Kilimanjaro for your onward flight.
