Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar

Tanzania
12 – 15 days

About This Journey

The northern circuit and then the Indian Ocean — the combination Tanzania was made for. Seven days move through Tarangire, Ngorongoro, and the Serengeti at a pace that allows for full days in the field rather than transfers. Then a single flight east, and you land on an island where the streets smell of cloves, the coral reef starts fifty metres offshore, and the only thing scheduled is the tide.

What This Journey Holds

  • Northern Circuit safari
  • Stone Town cultural immersion
  • Mnemba Atoll snorkelling
  • Spice farm tour

Day by Day

Day 1:Arrival — Arusha

Land at Kilimanjaro International and transfer to Arusha at the base of Mount Meru. An afternoon to recover from the flight, and dinner with your guide to go through the twelve days ahead — a fortnight that ends somewhere entirely unlike where it starts.

Day 2:Tarangire National Park

Southwest to Tarangire, where ancient baobabs stand across the landscape and the dry-season elephant concentrations along the river are the largest in northern Tanzania. Afternoon game drive through the swamps at Silale, which hold water when everything else has gone, and consequently hold everything else.

Day 3:Lake Manyara & the Highlands

North along the escarpment to Lake Manyara — groundwater forest, hot springs, enormous baboon troops, and flamingo on the soda flats. In the afternoon, climb through the Mbulu farmland to the Ngorongoro highlands, where the temperature drops noticeably and the air smells of woodsmoke and eucalyptus.

Day 4:Ngorongoro Crater

A dawn descent to the crater floor. Inside the caldera walls are lion, hippo, hyena, flamingo, and one of East Africa's last accessible populations of black rhino, along with elephant bulls of a size that stops conversation in the vehicle. You have the floor for the morning and ascend before the midday heat.

Day 5:Into the Serengeti — Olduvai en route

West across the conservation area, stopping at Olduvai Gorge and its small, superb museum, where the ash layers that preserved the Laetoli footprints are explained by the people still excavating them. Then down onto the short-grass plains and into the Serengeti proper for an afternoon drive.

Day 6:Central Serengeti — Full Day

A full day in the Seronera valley with a packed lunch, so nothing has to be cut short. This is the highest-density predator country in the park: lion on the granite kopjes, cheetah hunting the open plain, leopard in the riverine trees. Between July and October the migration is somewhere in the north; your guide will know exactly where.

Day 7:Serengeti — Balloon Dawn & Final Drives

Optional balloon flight at first light, drifting silently over the plains before a champagne breakfast in the grass. The rest of the day is spent following whatever the guide has been watching — a hunt developing, a pride with new cubs, a river crossing building on the far bank.

Day 8:Fly to Zanzibar — Stone Town

A light aircraft from the Serengeti airstrip east across the country to Zanzibar. You land, and the shift is total: humid, salt-heavy air and a town of coral-stone alleys that Arab, Persian, Indian, and Swahili traders built over a thousand years. An evening walk to the Forodhani gardens for the night market on the seafront.

Day 9:Stone Town

A morning through the old town with a guide who can read it — the carved doors and what their brass studs meant, the Old Fort, the House of Wonders, and the former slave market at Christ Church, where the memorial is unsparing and worth the discomfort. The afternoon is free for the spice bazaar or the rooftops.

Day 10:Spice Farm & Jozani Forest

Zanzibar was the world's clove capital for more than a century, and a working spice farm makes that history tangible — nutmeg, cardamom, vanilla, cinnamon bark scraped in front of you. In the afternoon, Jozani Forest and its Zanzibar red colobus, a monkey found nowhere else on earth and entirely unbothered by an audience.

Day 11:Mnemba Atoll & the North Coast

North to the coast for the reef at Mnemba Atoll — a protected marine area with visibility that regularly runs past thirty metres, turtles, and dolphin pods offshore. Snorkel or dive in the morning, then the long, flat, tidal beaches of the northeast for the rest of the day.

Day 12:Final Morning & Departure

A last swim before the tide turns and the transfer to Zanzibar airport for your flight home or onward. Most people spend the drive to the airport trying to work out how to stay longer.
