The Full Uganda Odyssey

Uganda
14 – 18 days

About This Journey

Fourteen days, five national parks, and the whole span of a country that packs snow peaks, savanna, rainforest, and the Nile inside one border. This is Uganda taken end to end — the shoebill in the papyrus at Mabamba, the white water at Jinja, the empty valleys of Kidepo where you may not see another vehicle all day, and finally the gorillas of Bwindi. It is the most complete journey we offer here, and it moves at the pace the country deserves.

What This Journey Holds

  • All five major national parks
  • Whitewater rafting the Nile
  • Cultural village stays
  • Mabamba Swamp birding

Day by Day

Day 1:Arrival — Entebbe

Arrive at Entebbe on the northern shore of Lake Victoria and settle into your lodge. The equator is forty kilometres south of here, and the evening arrives fast and warm. Your guide joins you for dinner to walk through the fortnight ahead — because there is a great deal of it.

Day 2:Mabamba Swamp — The Shoebill

A dawn crossing by motorboat to the Mabamba wetland, then transfer into a dugout canoe that can slip between the papyrus. You are looking for a shoebill: a metre and a half of prehistoric grey stillness that hunts lungfish by standing motionless for an hour at a time. When you find one, it will stare back at you with an expression that has been described, accurately, as disapproving.

Day 3:Jinja & the Source of the Nile

Drive east to Jinja, where the Nile leaves Lake Victoria and begins a 6,600-kilometre journey to the Mediterranean. The afternoon is yours to run the grade-five rapids below the town with one of the world's great whitewater operations — or, if that holds no appeal, to watch it all from a boat on the calm water with a cold drink.

Day 4:North to Murchison Falls — Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Head northwest, stopping at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary — the only place in Uganda where southern white rhino walk wild, tracked on foot with rangers who know each animal by name. Continue to the southern gate of Murchison Falls National Park and arrive as the light drops across the Nile.

Day 5:Murchison Falls — The Launch & the Top of the Falls

A morning game drive across the Buligi peninsula — Rothschild's giraffe, Jackson's hartebeest, elephant, and lion in the long grass. In the afternoon a boat carries you upstream to the foot of the falls, where the entire river is squeezed through a seven-metre gap in the rock. You climb the last stretch on foot to stand at the top of it. Photographs do not convey the noise.

Day 6:Murchison — Northern Bank & Karuma

A full day in the park's northern sector, where the savanna opens out and the game concentrates along the river. Your guide takes the tracks that see the least traffic. In the evening, sundowners on the escarpment as the Nile turns metallic below you and the hippos begin their nightly argument.

Day 7:Into Karamoja — Kidepo Valley National Park

Fly or drive northeast into Karamoja, the semi-arid frontier region that feels like a different country. Kidepo Valley sits in the far corner against the South Sudanese border, ringed by mountains, and receives fewer visitors in a year than the Serengeti receives in a morning. Arrive in the afternoon and let the scale of it settle.

Day 8:Kidepo — The Narus Valley

Game drives through the Narus Valley, where dry-season water holds the wildlife in extraordinary density — buffalo herds a thousand strong, lion on the rocks, cheetah on the open ground, and ostrich, which occur nowhere else in Uganda. You may spend the whole day without seeing another vehicle. That is not an exaggeration; it is simply how Kidepo is.

Day 9:Kidepo — Karamojong Country & the Kanangorok Springs

A morning with a Karamojong community at their manyatta — a fortified homestead of thorn and mud, built around cattle, which remain the centre of everything here. The afternoon takes you north to the Kanangorok hot springs on the Sudanese border, across country so empty it registers as a kind of pressure.

Day 10:South to Kibale Forest

Fly south across the length of the country to Kibale, trading the dust of Karamoja for high, dripping rainforest in a single morning. The afternoon is for a slow walk near the lodge, a crater-lake view, and an early night before the forest starts before dawn.

Day 11:Chimpanzee Tracking & Bigodi

Into Kibale at first light with your tracker, following the calls — a sound that carries a kilometre and raises the hair on your arms the first time you hear it properly. An hour with the chimps in the canopy and on the forest floor. In the afternoon, the community-run Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary and its mangabeys, turacos, and butterflies.

Day 12:Queen Elizabeth National Park — Kazinga & Ishasha

South into Queen Elizabeth, where the Kazinga Channel links two lakes and draws in the largest concentration of hippo in Africa. An afternoon boat cruise puts you among elephant at the water's edge and buffalo standing chest-deep. Continue to the Ishasha sector, whose lions have taken, inexplicably and reliably, to sleeping in the fig trees.

Day 13:Into Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Climb into the Albertine Rift highlands to Bwindi — 25,000 years of unbroken forest clinging to slopes so steep the trees seem stacked on one another. Arrive with time for a community walk or the Batwa cultural trail, and an early dinner. Tomorrow starts early and asks something of you.

Day 14:Gorilla Trekking & Departure

The last day of a long journey, and the one everything has been building toward. You walk in with a small group, follow the trackers' radio, and eventually stop — because they are right there. One hour with a habituated family: a silverback holding the middle distance, juveniles wrestling in the vines, an infant clinging to its mother's back. Then out of the forest, and home.
