The Great Migration Safari

Kenya & Tanzania
8 – 12 days

About This Journey

Somewhere between two and three million wildebeest and zebra move in a continuous loop across the Serengeti and Masai Mara. They follow the rains, and in doing so they create the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth. This journey puts you in the middle of it — not as a spectator at a distance, but close enough to hear the drumming of hooves and feel the ground move beneath you.

What This Journey Holds

  • Witness wildebeest river crossings in the Masai Mara — one of the most dramatic natural events on earth
  • Drive the vast Serengeti plains at dawn, when the light is low and the lions are still moving
  • Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater — a self-contained world of predators and prey
  • Stand at Amboseli as elephants move against the snowcapped face of Kilimanjaro
  • Walk with Maasai herders and hear how they have lived alongside lions for generations

Day by Day

Day 1:Arrival in Nairobi

Arrive in Nairobi and transfer to your lodge. The city sits at altitude and the air is different here — cooler and cleaner than most East African capitals. A briefing with your guide over dinner, and an early start tomorrow.

Day 2:Into the Masai Mara

Fly or drive south from Nairobi into the Masai Mara — the northern extension of the Serengeti ecosystem. The landscape opens as you arrive: rolling plains, acacia silhouettes, the silver thread of the Mara River. Your camp is set close to the river, positioned for what is coming.

Day 3:River Crossings & Open Plains

The morning begins before dawn. Your guide takes you to a point above the Mara River and you wait. Then you hear them — the deep, resonant sound of thousands of animals approaching the bank. What follows is chaos, courage, and crocodiles. The crossing is different every time, and no photograph fully captures it.

Day 4:Masai Mara — Dawn & Dusk Drives

Full day in the Mara. The plains are alive in every direction — lion prides with cubs, cheetahs with morning kills, hippos crowded into the river pools. At dusk, your guide stops the vehicle and pours a sundowner as the sky turns colour over the Mara Triangle.

Day 5:Cross into Tanzania — Serengeti

Cross the border into Tanzania and enter the Serengeti — the word means "endless plain" in Maasai, and on the ground you understand why. The migration stretches in every direction. Lions rest in the road. Elephants move slowly through the golden grass. You drive for hours without seeing another vehicle.

Day 6:Serengeti — Deep Plains

A full day in the central Serengeti, where the grasslands seem to go on forever. Leopards drape themselves over acacia branches in the afternoon. Balloon safaris at dawn are available for those who wish to see the migration from the air, drifting silently above it all.

Day 7:Ngorongoro Crater

Drive to the rim of Ngorongoro and look down into one of the world's natural wonders — a volcanic caldera 20 kilometres wide, enclosing a complete ecosystem. Descend early morning into the crater floor, where lions, rhino, flamingos, and the full cast of African wildlife live in extraordinary proximity.

Day 8:Amboseli & Kilimanjaro

Drive to Amboseli as the clouds part and reveal the snow-capped summit of Kilimanjaro above the treeline. This park is known for its elephant populations — vast, relaxed herds that move through the dust with a kind of slow dignity, the mountain rising behind them. It is one of Africa's great photographs, and a greater experience.
